Most Expensive Necklaces In The World

‘Red Scarlet’

From dazzling tiaras once worn by royals to iconic emeralds that Hollywood icons lavished themselves in, some of the world’s most amazing jewelry auctions of all time have involved record-breaking amounts of cash and serious competition between buyers.

However, Diamond necklaces, sometimes combined with other gems, are more than just accessories you can wear. They have become a symbol of social status. A great diamond or ruby necklace not just represents the owner’s wealth but also their class and taste of art.

Buyers at last Christie’s Hong Kong auction were struck by the ‘Red Scarlet’ necklace, making it one of the most expensive necklaces ever sold at auction.

‘Red Scarlet’

Created by world-renowned jewelry designer James W Currens for Hong Kong jeweler Fai Dee.

The Red Scarlet is an exquisite necklace boasting twenty-six graduated oval-shaped rubies that weigh between 1.27 and 5.38 carats. The beauty of each ruby is accentuated by a cluster of marquise and pear-shaped 18-carat diamonds mounted in platinum and 18-carat yellow gold.

Rubies are often treated to improve their color, these stones have been spared any such enhancement. To find rubies of the quality, size, color, and level of clarity displayed in this necklace is extremely rare. The most desirable rubies in the world are still considered those from Burma (today’s Myanmar). More, in particular, the ones from the Mogok-valley. Rubies, the birthstone of July, are considered the king of gems and represent love, health, and wisdom. It was believed wearing a piece of fine red ruby jewelry bestowed good fortune on its owner. Ruby is the most valuable gemstone and its value increases based on its color and quality. The color of these gemstones varies from the exquisite pink-red to the vivid pigeon blood-red hue. These rubies are valued high in the market, thanks to their beauty, durability, and rarity. Red Scarlet was sold for an amazing $5.1 million at a Christie’s auction in Hong Kong in November 2012.
